We could get a new House Speaker tomorrow!

October 10, 2o23

Who will be the next Speaker of the House?

It’s possible we’ll know by tomorrow. I’ll tell you more about the timing in a second but first…

Tonight House Republicans met for a closed-door candidate forum to hear from the two top contenders to take over as Speaker… Representatives Jim Jordan and Steve Scalise. The two debated on their visions for the future of the party and of the House.

And the Republican congressman responsible for bringing the motion to get rid of the last Speaker said after hearing from Jordan and Scalise tonight – he’s not worried.

But the man who was just fired from the job says if the House Republicans don’t make some serious changes there will be something to worry about.

Former Speaker McCarthy is referring to the eight far right Republicans who voted to fire him. Because the Republican majority in the House so razor thin – even the smallest group can wield a ton of power. But more moderate Republicans warn – the next Speaker should be able to do more than just cater to one faction of the Republican party…because a lot is on the line.

As of tonight – the plan is – tomorrow the House Republicans will meet again and take a vote amongst just their conference. They will take a vote on who will be the next Speaker. Whoever can get to 217 (which is the current majority) will then be put up for a vote of the full House. At this point – it doesn’t appear like either candidate has the votes necessary. But once the house Republicans can coalesce behind one person – he will be nominated on the House floor and a full House vote will take place. If all goes according to plan, will happen tomorrow night.
