Vice President Harris has now secured enough delegate votes to secure the Democratic party nomination for President of the United States. I’ll tell you how that happened in just a second but first let me make this very very clear.
As I told you in great detail in this video this morning and in this video back in January – when you vote in a primary election or in a caucus you are not voting for the candidate. You are voting for the state delegates who will then vote at the party convention for their party’s candidate. This is how the democratic party works and this is how the republican party works. That’s how former President Trump secured the Republican nomination just last week. Remember – you saw the delegates voting for him on the floor of the convention. That’s what was going on –then, and only then did he become the official nominee for the republican party.
Well – as of today — the democrats do not have a nominee. It’s not Kamala Harris and it’s not even Joe Biden. There is no official democratic nominee because the Democratic party delegates have not yet cast their votes.
But they will in the next few days. First at a virtual convention between August 1st and August 7th and then at the in-person convention August 19th to the 22nd.
To win the Democratic party nomination, a candidate must receive the majority of the 4747 voting delegates. That means a candidate needs to secure 1976 delegate votes. As of tonight – Vice President Harris has absolutely secured that number and more. Almost 2600 delegates say they will vote for Kamala Harris. And that number could increase. Remember – during the primary elections where Joe Biden received 14 million votes – those votes were for the Biden Harris delegates so without another viable Democratic candidate that meets the DNC rules, those delegates easily switched to Harris.
So how did this happen so quickly? Well – within hours of President Biden stepping away from the campaign, Kamala Harris was on the phone locking up, delegates, big and small donors, elected officials and other party leaders. The campaign says she took in $81 million in donations in one day which is obviously a record and added 30,000 new volunteers to the campaign.
I said it before and I’ll say it again. Nothing is done until the delegates vote. And when that happens, obviously I will let you know.
