Secret Service Director resigns after Trump assassination attempt

July 23, 2024

She’s out.

After an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump and a disastrous performance on capital hill yesterday – the Director of the Secret Service has officially resigned.

Kimberly Cheatle submitted a letter of resignation to her Secret Service colleagues this morning saying “in light of recent events, it is with a heavy heart that, i have made the difficult decision to step down as your director.”

Now if you watched yesterday’s hearing – this resignation should be no surprise.

Look you know Democrats and Republicans can’t agree that the sky is blue. But they all agreed Director Cheatle had to go after she acknowledged responsibility for the worst security failure since President Reagan was shot in 1981.

So now what?

Well – House Speaker Mike Johnson and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries announced they will form a bipartisan House task force of lawmakers to investigate the failure. Plus there are several investigations ongoing on trying to get to the bottom of what happened. An internal Secret Service investigation, an outside investigation, an Inspector General investigation and of course a Department of Justice criminal investigation. President Biden accepted Cheatle’s resignation, thanked her for her service and said he would be appointing a new Director soon. In the meantime, the Homeland Security Secretary appointed the Secret Service Deputy Director Ronald Rowe to lead the organization.
