Is the Threads a Twitter killer?
Well, that’s yet to be seen…but according to Meta — in less than 24 hours, Threads has gained more than 30 million users. Including me.
But the company has already admitted it’s missing some critical features and gave some clarify about whether or not you can delete your threads account if you change your mind.
So – if you’ve been on Threads yet — you know –right now — it feels like a combination of a reunion and summer camp and chaos all wrapped up into one thing. And for those of you who haven’t been over there yet, it’ll feel familiar. It’s connected to Instagram and therefore Facebook – but it’s text based like Twitter. It’s pretty simple -the posts are called Threads, you can like, repost, reply…just basics. Its super easy to sign up – because it’s just attached to your Instagram so you can follow all the same people on Threads as you do on Instagram with just one click. And as of right now – though all the brands and lots of celebrities are on threads — it doesn’t appear like there are ads.
Now – CEO of Instagram posted today saying the platform is missing several pretty important features including search, hashtags, a following feed, private messaging and more. He said “we’re on it. The amazing team is cranking away. But full disclosure, it’ll take time.”
But one of the biggest controversies floating around Threads last night was whether or not you can delete the account if you don’t want to be on threads anymore. The terms of service say while you can delete individual threads the only way for you to delete your account is if you delete your Instagram account. Obviously – lots of people were pissed about that. So today the Instagram CEO put out a clarification saying yes — you can deactivate your Threads account but that will just hide your Threads profile and content. You can also set your Threads account to private. Both of those options do not require you to delete your Instagram account. As I said, your Threads account is connected to your Instagram account so the company says it’s working on a way to decouple those things so you can is also delete your Threads account separately if you WANT.
