The Mail is Getting MORE Expensive

March 28, 2026

Another thing lots of us need and use a lot is about to get more expensive.

Is it food?

No…well yeah…but no.

Is it gas.

No. Well, absolutely, but no.

Is it rent and mortgage rates?

No. Well, yeah but that’s not what I’m talking about either.

It’s mail.

The US postal service just posted this notice that says they have to temporarily raise prices by 8% to “reflect market conditions in prices for competitive products.” They say that their cost to transport mail has increased – Iran war – inflation –  plus they say and all their competitors have also raised their prices because of those “market conditions.” – so they want to as well.

Now – I want to be clear – the 8% price increase will *not* impact the cost of a first-class stamp.

But it will apply to everything else including priority mail express, priority mail, USPS ground advantage and parcel select.

The governors of the postal service just approved this limited time price increase two days ago and now the postal regulatory commission will have to approve.

But the plan is for the price increase to take effect on April 26 and then last until midnight on January 17 2027. If approve that’s about 8 months of this 8% increase. The notice then says after that the “postal service can determine if a different long-term approach is needed.”
