The House just pass a continuing resolution to fund all of Homeland Security (DHS) including TSA and ICE and Customs and Border Protection just for the next few weeks.
The final vote was 213 to 203. All the Republicans who were present voted yes along with three Democrats. The rest of the Democrats who were present voted no. And 16 members did not vote.
This late night vote at 11:30 pm on a Friday night came after the House Speaker Mike Johnson rejected the unanimous Senate plan that would have funded all of DHS including TSA but *excluding ICE and parts of CBP. Johnson called that unanimous and bipartisan deal a “joke.”
Well – the joke may be on him because there is no way this continuing resolution is going to pass in the Senate. The House has passed this same bill like 5 times and every time the Senate has rejected it.
This time will not be any different. Not only is the Senate gone on their two week recess but the Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer put out a statement saying this continuing resolution is dead on arrival. The statement says that the “Senate Democrats worked with Senate Republicans to come up with a compromise to fund TSA, FEMA and CISA to secure our ports of entry. He goes on to say we’ve been clear from day one: Democrats will fund critical Homeland Security functions—but we will not give a blank check to Trump’s lawless and deadly immigration militia without reforms.”
That’s political rhetoric of course, but he’s talking about what Democrats have bene saying from the beginning and the reason why they won’t fund ICE and CBP – which is because the Democrats want serious policy changes made to the way ICE and CBP officers conduct themselves on the streets of America. Since they couldn’t reach a deal with Senate Republicans on those policy changes they passed the bill that the House rejected this afternoon.
So I know is going to sound like ridiculous politics…and it is. The House Speaker knows this is not going to pass in the Senate, yet he did it anyway. And he knows the Senate is gone. And now – the House is also schedule to leave for their two week recess too. That means DHS will still not be funded for at least the next two weeks – and as I mentioned in this video – yes the president ordered TSA agents to be paid – but that is legally dicey and it’s unclear where that money is coming from and how long it can last.
