The House is now on recess for the next six weeks. Yes. You heard that correctly. Lawmakers are not coming back to Washington DC until September 9th.
You may be thinking – if they did all their work – go home, meet with their constituents enjoy the last month of summer.
So they must have passed all the required bills so our government doesn’t shut down at the end of September. Right?
No.
Did they finish their investigation into the attempt on former President Trump’s life.
No.
Secure the border?
Come on. No.
That fact is – the House was technically scheduled to be working at the capital through next week – but because there was an impasse on a few of the appropriation bills to fund parts of the government house leadership threw in the towel early. That means when they return they will still have to pass several separate funding bills then will have to negotiate with the senate to keep our government from shutting down. That sets up the real possibility that congress will have to kick the can down the road and pass a continuing resolution so the government doesn’t shut down with only weeks to go before the presidential elections.
Look – the reality is Congress always has a longer august recess – it’s just not always six weeks.
The senate is still in Washington until next week – but then they too are on recess until September 9th.
