The Department of Justice and the trump team have agreed on a special master. But this is not over and there are still a lot of things they disagree on.
The Justice Department just filed this four-page document saying – of the two names submitted by DOJ and the two names submitted by team Trump, the only people who would have the experience and qualifications to be a special master are the DOJ’s two picks *and* one of the Trump picks… Judge Raymond Dearie.
So who is he?
Judge Dearie technically retired as the chief judge in the Eastern District of New York in 2011, but is currently still hearing cases as a senior judge in the same circuit. He also served on the foreign intelligence surveillance court or the FISA court for 7 years.
He was appointed to the bench by President Reagan in 1986.
But there are a lot of disagreements about what this special master would do, what documents he or she would have access to, how long the review should take and who should pay for him or her.
Don’t forget the Department of Justice is still planning to appeal the whole idea of this special master. We will have to wait and see what Florida federal Judge Cannon rules on all of this in the coming days.
