Automatic Military Draft Registration Coming Soon! | Lisa Remillard

Automatic military draft registration coming soon!

April 11, 2026

If you are a young man between the ages of 18 and 26 the US government is going to automatically register for you the military draft in about 8 months. The military selective service filed a proposed rule to make this happen no later than December of 2026.

And this is all possible because of a provision tucked into this law passed by congress in December of 2025. In section 535 of the national defense authorization act congress established the ability for the government to use its available data to automatically register young men for the military draft. The law says young men who are registered may also be required to provide the military selective service with additional information including date of birth, address, social security number, phone number and email address. And the law gives other government agencies permission to share the data they have on these young men with the military selective service agency.

Before I go any further – you need to understand – this is not new. All young men in the United States ages 18 to 25 – for decades have been required to register for the US military draft. But in the past – a young man would have to go out of his way to physically fill out the registration forms. Well in 2025 – congress decided to cut out the middleman and save some money by transferring the responsibility to register for the draft from the young man to the US government. Lawmakers said at the time –the US government already has the information about young men who meet the requirements – so doing this automatically would save everyone time and money. On March 30th the selective service filed a proposed rule to formalize this new automatic registration and we’re currently waiting for the rule to be finalized. Under the new rule, young men would be registered automatically within 30 days of their 18th birthday.

I want to make it clear that there is no military draft currently underway. There hasn’t been a military draft in the United States since the Viet Nam war in the 1960s and 70s.  Yet every single year after that all young men have bene required to register for the draft in the event the president and congress make the decision to use it. Now – I know there has been a lot of talk about this Iran war and whether the US government would reinstate the draft. While the White House press secretary has said that President Trump never takes the option off the table, I can tell you there are *no* serious conversations going on to reinstate the military draft. Also – you need to know that the president can’t just reinstate the military draft on his own – both the House and Senate would have to pass a bill to make it happen.
