It looks like civilization ending strikes by the United States on Iran – are off – maybe.
President Trump just posted this to his social media page. He said that he would agree to a Pakistani request for a two-week cease fire but only if the Islamic Republic of Iran agrees to a complete, immediate and safe opening of the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump also said that the US received a 10-point proposal from Iran and believe it is a workable basis on which to negotiate.
He then ends with as president and also representing the countries of the Middle East, it is an honor to have this long-term problem close to a resolution.
Ok – first – it’s very unclear if Iran has agreed to anything…that means it’s unclear if there will be a ceasefire. And it’s unclear if the Strait of Hormuz is even open. So let’s just hold off until we know.
Second – it’s also been clear that President Trump has been looking for an offramp after he has continually ratcheted up his rhetoric against Iran. This Pakistani proposal has been floating around for the last few hours and it looks like finally Trump took it as his offramp. But we have no idea what’s in this alleged 10 point plan.
And three – while Trump said that he is representing the countries in the Middle East, it’s unclear if and how long Israel will also abide by this ceasefire…and that’s a big piece of this.
But most important you need to remember– it takes two to agree to a ceasefire. The United States is only half of this equation — this is going to depend on what Iran does and up until now – Iran has not been willing to agree to a ceasefire. There was a similar ceasefire proposal made last week and Iran said no. We’ll see what happens if and when the Strait of Hormuz opens up.
