Why did Trump ban Claude instead of addressing surveillance concerns?

February 27, 2026

President Trump has just ordered the United States government to immediately cease all use of Anthropic’s technology – including it’s powerful AI model Claude —  after the company refused to comply with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s demands.

The president just posted this statement to his social media account saying “the United States of America will never allow a radical left, woke company to dictate how our great military fights and wins wars! That decision belongs to your commander-in-chief, and the tremendous leaders I appoint to run our military.” He then said “the leftwing nut jobs at anthropic have made a disastrous mistake trying to strong-arm the department of war, and force them to obey their terms of service instead of our constitution. Their selfishness is putting American lives at risk, our troops in danger, and our national security in jeopardy.”

So what are these terms of service that Trump says are too left wing? Well – as I reported in this video yesterday – Anthropic’s CEO says the company has some ethical red lines that it will not cross when it comes how its powerful ai models are used. They said all the pentagon had to agree to not use its AI models for mass domestic surveillance – which means spying on you and you…and not use its AI models for autonomous weapons…meaning weapons that can aim and fire without a human behind it.

See Anthropic’s CEO Dario Amodei says because our laws are so outdated and ai is so powerful and advanced – AI is capable of doing those things while still complying with the current law. That’s why Anthropic is just seeking to have the pentagon confirm that they won’t use Claude to do those things. But the pentagon won’t. They just keep saying that they will comply with the law. Which we’ve already established is outdated. Amodei also said that Anthropic’s position isn’t just limited to the United States – the company has also turned down hundreds of millions of dollars and cut off the use of Claude by firms linked to the Chinese communist party, and has shut down CCP-sponsored cyberattacks that attempted to abuse Claude.

Regardless, Trump say today that the US government doesn’t need or want to use Anthropic’s technology and that his government will not do business with them again. Keep in mind – Anthropic was just awarded a $200-million contract in July…so it appears that’s canceled. The problem is Claude is already integrated into the US government’s classified networks so it’s going to be difficult to unwind all of that. That’s why Trump said that there will be a six month phase out of Anthropic’s products. Trump then added a parting threat to the company saying Anthropic “better get their act together, and be helpful during this phase out period, or I will use the full power of the presidency to make them comply, with major civil and criminal consequences to follow.” I don’t know what he’s talking about Anthropic’s CEO has already said that his company is happy to help. But here’s the thing – Anthropic’s rival AI company Open AI – which has Chat GPT – has already said that it shares Anthropic’s red lines.
