So – Americans don’t have a legal right to birth control?
Well that’s what the Senate just said after a vote on the Right to Contraception Act failed. Yes – you heard me correctly a bill called the right to contraception act failed in the United States senate yesterday – by a lot.
The vote was 51 to 39. All Democrats and Independents plus two Republicans – both female — voted yes and 39 Republicans voted no. 10 Senators did not vote. Of the Senators who did not vote – 9 were Republicans and 1 was a Democrat. The bill needed 60 votes to move forward.
Now – you may be wondering how or why anyone would be against making contraception the right of everyone in the United States. Well – according to the Republicans who voted against this bill – they say this bill is unnecessary and contraception is not in jeopardy. They accuse Democrats of using this as a scare tactic. Some also say this bill could be seen as a way to mandate access to abortion drugs.
But the fact is there are some lawmakers in certain states that have definitely proposed state laws to limit the accessibility of birth control methods like IUDs and Plan B.
So what does this mean for you. Well, not a lot. But you should be paying attention to what’s happening in your state. But definitely watch for the Democrats to use this vote by Republicans on the campaign trail ahead of November.
