That is guy who is going to replace Nancy Pelosi as the leader of the Democrats in the House.
But who is Representative Hakeem Jeffries?
He is a 52-year-old Democrat from New York’s District 8 which is the Brooklyn area. He was first elected to the House in 2012. He has served as the Democratic caucus chair for the last four years. And has long been seen as Nancy Pelosi’s successor. In fact – he ran unopposed for the leader role today. His is also the first Black lawmaker to ever lead a political party’s caucus in either the House or the Senate.
But Jefferies isn’t the only new leader elected today. The number two Democrat who will serve as Jefferies’s deputy and Minority Whip will be Representative Katherine Clark from Massachusetts. And Representative Pete Aguilar from California will be the number three Democrat in the role of Democratic Caucus chair.
Jefferies, Clark and Aguilar will replace the top three Democrats, Pelosi, Steny Hoyer & Jim Clyburn) who have served in their leadership roles for the past two decades.
