How did the US get into this war with Iran? Did Israel drag the US into it? Or did President Trump make the decision and bring Israel along??
Here’s what the president said today.
So – Trump was clear today that he was the one who made the decision to attack Iran first because in Trump’s opinion he thought Iran was getting ready to strike someone…not sure who he’s referring to or what he’s basing that on. He said then he pulled Israel into this war. But that’s not the story Trump’s own secretary of state gave lawmakers just yesterday when he had to justify to them why this happened.
And that explanation was backed up by the speaker of the house.
Clearly trump’s explanation completely contradicts the speaker’s and the secretary’s. But why does it matter? Well –it matters because the reason why we’re in this war with Iran is important. Six US service members have already been killed as a result and more than a dozen others have been seriously injured. Trump said more American lives are going to be lost because of this action. Not to mention the thousands of Americans who are in the middle east right now with no way to get home because the airspace is basically shut down because Iran is lashing out and hitting our other allies in the region. Violence is spreading throughout the already volatile middle east. And it matters because president trump says this u-s military campaign is going to keep going for 4 to 5 more weeks or even longer if necessary. And it matters because trump has also not ruled out putting u-s boots on the ground in iron.
And besides the “why” the other question is what’s the point? President Trump said he has clear objectives and goals – though they have shifted several times since this all started. Yesterday he said the four main objectives are — one — to destroy Iran’s missile capabilities. Two — to annihilate Iran’s navy. Three – to prevent the country from obtaining a nuclear weapon. And four– to stop Iran from arming, funding and directing terrorist groups outside its borders. But the reality is – none of that can really happen unless the Iranian regime changes too. But that’s not guaranteed either and many military and foreign policy experts say in the end — the leadership structure of Iran and policies probably won’t change because of this military campaign. Today – trump said that would be the worst case scenario.
For the record President Trump also said that all the Iranian leaders who the trump administration would have wanted to take over the country after the supreme leader was killed are now also dead. So he said his administration hasn’t identified anyone who they think could take over the country and could help the United States accomplish Trump’s objectives without having to put US boots on the ground.
