You’ve probably been seeing these images at our borders. Thousands of migrants waiting to cross into the United States. Now — the Biden Administration is bracing for even more attempting to cross possibly as soon as next week.
That’s because a federal judge ruled a trump era policy that the Biden Administration had been relying on is not legal and must end by December 21. I have been reporting on Title 42 in several videos on this page and on my YouTube page. It’s a policy that allows border patrol to automatically turn away asylum seekers because of fears of Covid19.
The Biden Administration is currently appealing that judge’s ruling, but just in case they lose that appeal, the Department of Homeland Security just released this updated six pillar plan to address the brewing migrant crisis. Those plans include things like, surging border patrol agents to the border to help deal with the influx of people, modernizing the systems to process these people faster, enforcing the consequences for those who cross illegally and targeting the human traffickers who are taking advantage of these migrants just to name a few.
Homeland Security says government agencies and partners have been implementing some of these plans since April but things are really ramping up. It’s important to note — just because Title 42 is likely going away, doesn’t mean we don’t have other policies to deal with immigration. We absolutely do and homeland security say those will be enforced to the fullest extent.
Now – let’s talk about the politics of immigration and why this doesn’t get fixed. The fact is – our decades-old immigration system is “broken” and DHS admits it. No new serious legislation has been passed through congress to update or modernize our system or our laws for more than a decade. Presidents have come and gone and because of the gridlock in Congress they’ve had to implement executive orders and border policies that the next President just changes. The bottom line is – of course there are lawmakers that genuinely want to fix our immigration system – but politically, both the left and the right – especially in this polarized country – use the border as a campaign wedge issue and fixing it would take that away. Democrats and Republicans have vastly different ideas of how to handle the border and neither side is willing to budge. And sadly, in this new 2023 Congress when the Democrats control the White House and the Senate and Republicans control the House nothing will likely get done.
