We have no Speaker of the House.
So… now what?
Nothing. The plan – at least for now – is the House is adjourned until next week!
What?
You heard me correctly next. Week! According to the Republicans who are in charge of the House of Representatives because they are still the majority –they have no member of their conference who can get a majority of the votes to become the next elected Speaker of the house. So – as of right now — the party has decided to break for the rest of the week — to allow members some time to basically figure out who they can elect. Next Tuesday there will be a Republican House meeting so they can look at the options on the table and decide who can get the votes. Once that’s decided, there will be a full House vote either next Tuesday night or next Wednesday.
I can tell you who won’t be on the list of speaker candidates
Kevin McCarthy. As I told you in this video – he just announced he will not run for Speaker again.
But without any elected Speaker – as I have told you many times – no legislative business can get done. Let me say that again – no legislative business can get done.
The Speaker pro tem Patrick McHenry is a figurehead. He is not able to conduct any real business. It must be done by an elected Speaker of the House. So next week — the first order of business is not going to be funding the government before the next shutdown, it’s not going to be the Biden impeachment inquiry, it’s not going to be any of the people’s business. The first order of business is electing a Speaker of the house.
