Your mail make take a few more days to get to you and it’s going to cost you a little more.
What? Slower mail for more money? Yep. That’s the plan under the Louis Dejoy the postmaster general to overhaul the US postal service in order to –what he says will slash costs. It started on October 1st.
So what does it mean for you?
According to the post office plan – it’s current three-day delivery standard for first-class mail for things like letters, bills, tax documents etc. – will drop to delivery anywhere within the us within five. Single piece first-class mail traveling within 3-hour local areas will still have a standard two-day delivery.
Experts say the mail slowdown will likely impact those who live in rural areas and certain states like Texas, California, Florida, Oregon and Washington. The post office maintains 61% of first-class mail and 93% of periodicals will keep their current service standards.
As for how much it’ll cost you? The post office has *temporarily* increased price. For a regular stamp it’ll will go from 55 cents to 58 cents. International stamps will increase by a dime. And depending on the weight of your packages those could cost could increase anywhere from 75cents to $5 more.
It’s also worth noting that these deliveries slow down plans and increase costs will most likely be in place through the holidays. So what can you do? According to the post office fact sheet – USPS’s advice is to plan ahead. So if you have a bill that’s due – send it early. Yeah…that’s it.
Dejoy unveiled this 10-year plan back in march. He says it’ll erase about $160 billion loss over the next decade.
