The Maya Angelou quarter is here.
We all know good George Washington is on the heads side.
But earlier this week, the US mint started shipping out — a first-of-its-kind tails image.
That image is the face of a celebrated writer, performer, and social activist…Maya Angelou. Her face is the first in a series of quarters that’ll be rolled out every year until 2025 celebrating great American Women. All quarters will continue to have Washington on the heads side, but the tail side will switch out.
Other women who are getting the US Mint quarter treatment in 2022 include — astronaut Sally Ride, Wilma Mankiller the first female principal chief of the Cherokee Nation, Anna May Wong the first Chinese American film star in Hollywood and Nina Otero-Warren – a leader in New Mexico’s suffrage movement and the first female superintendent of Santa Fe public schools.
More than 11,000 online suggestions from the public were collected on the National Women’s History Museum website last year. Those suggestions were narrowed down based on the collectable coin redesign act of 2020. The final decision approval is up to the Treasury Secretary
