Surprise – the East Wing demolition wasn’t the only renovation going on at the White House. President Trump out of nowhere today said he also completely renovated the Lincoln bathroom.
This was the Lincoln bathroom before. And this is what it looks like now. The entire thing is ceiling to floor is marble. With gold fixtures and accents. All. The. Marble.
President Trump said in a post on his social media page tonight that the bathroom was last renovated in the 1940s with what Trump calls an art deco green tile. Which Trump says was totally inappropriate for the Lincoln era. He said his renovation was “very appropriate for the time of Abraham Lincoln and in fact could be the marble that was originally there.”
Mmmm. Probably not. Do you want to see what the Lincoln bedroom looked like when Lincoln was around? Here’s a photo of the Lincoln bedroom from the 1870s courtesy of the white house historical association. Do you see any marble? Because I don’t. Not to say there wasn’t marble used at the White House at that time – there was – just not in the Lincoln bedroom and surly not ceiling to floor marble in the Lincoln bathroom.
So – for a little more context – here are some more images that President Trump posted today of the new Lincoln bathroom which is attached to the Lincoln bedroom. Do you want to see what that looks like? Here’s a photo of it again courtesy of the White House Historical Association. This photo was taken in 2005. Back in 2002 First Lady Laura Bush said she wanted to refurbish the Lincoln bedroom and take it back to its historical roots. So in connection with the White House Historical Association the former first lady got financing from the historical association and then brought in the preservation committee and an expert subcommittee to undergo a years long planning and renovation process and finally got it done by 2005. It took three years.
We have no idea when President Trump started this bathroom project. It certainly wasn’t three years ago. And – most importantly, we have no idea who paid for this bathroom renovation. Trump has not said. It also may feel like this announcement comes at a bad time. While trump is talking about a ceiling to floor marble bathroom – the u-s government has been shut down for almost a month, millions of federal workers aren’t getting a paycheck and 42 million Americans are not going to get their snap benefits tomorrow.
