President Trump and the Department of Justice cannot move forward with that controversial $1.8 billion anti-weaponization fund — at least not right now.
That’s because, in this short order, a federal judge in Virginia blocked the DOJ from working on this fund, blocked any payments from going out to anyone from this fund, and even blocked any consideration of any claims that may be submitted to the fund — at least for the next two weeks.
This all stems from this lawsuit filed by a group of people and entities who say they have faced partisan attacks by the Trump administration but say they expect to be excluded from accessing the fund. In their lawsuit, they call this fund a “slush fund of taxpayer money to dispense payments to those the Trump-Vance administration favors.”
They argue that not only is the anti-weaponization fund illegal for that reason, but it’s also illegal because it stems from a $10 billion lawsuit filed by the sitting president of the United States against his own IRS and was litigated by his own Department of Justice. Then, his own DOJ decided not to fight the lawsuit and instead settle with the president to create this fund. The plaintiffs say that, too, is illegal because “the president controlled both sides of the litigation.”
Now, this judge in Virginia did not say whether this anti-weaponization fund is illegal or not. All she said was that she wants to look at it. But it is telling that she has blocked the Trump administration from taking one single step toward moving this fund forward.
The Trump administration obviously opposes all of this, but regardless, this judge has ordered the Trump administration to answer for these allegations and ordered a hearing on this matter on June 12.
