Nikki Haley is barreling towards her fifth straight primary election loss and President Biden is facing a threat from his own party voters who say they’ll vote for “uncommitted” instead of voting for him.
The question is – how big of a problem is that going to be for him.
All day today – voters have been casting their ballots in the Michigan primary election. Michigan – like South Carolina is an open primary state. As I told you in this video – that means any voter can vote on either the Democrat or Republican primary ballot regardless of which party they are registered for. So yes – Democrats and Independents can vote on the Republican primary ballot and Republicans and Independents can vote on the Democrat primary ballot if they want. That’s all totally legal. Michigan also has early voting and absentee voting available.
Now – Michigan is very important swing state. Just to give you some quick historical background – in 2012 – former President Barack Obama won Michigan. In 2016 – then candidate Trump won Michigan. In 2020 – President Biden flipped Michigan back to blue.
So Michigan is a very critical state when it comes to Biden’s path to reelection in 2024. He really has to win the state again. And – Michigan is home to one of the United States’ largest communities of Arab and Muslim Americans a key coalition of voters for Biden. And they are not happy about the way he has handled the Israel Hamas war. That’s an understatement. So – those voters mounted this primary election protest campaign – to vote “uncommitted” instead of voting for Biden tonight. In Michigan, “uncommitted” is listed on the ballot as an option after all the names of the presidential candidates who have qualified to be on the ballot. If enough voters cast “uncommitted” votes – the Michigan democrat party can send non-committed delegates to the national convention which would not look good for Biden. It’s worth noting – Michiganders – both Democrats and Republicans have a history of voting un-committed in primary elections. In fact – in 2012 almost 21,000 Democrats voted uncommitted against Barack Obama in the primary of his reelection year. That said — when the vote totals roll in tonight – keep an eye on how many “uncommitted” votes come in – it could be a real warning sign for the current president’s reelection campaign.
On the Republican side – there is really no question that former President Trump will again win the Republican primary in Michigan beating former Governor Nikki Haley again. She has not won one primary yet. She’s lost to Trump in Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina. Haley says she will continue on and stay in the race at least until Super Tuesday which is a week from today.
