President Trump says he has secured a deal with Iran that could be signed as soon as this weekend.
Now, that was very detailed. And what Trump also said—just not in this clip—was that once the deal is signed, the Strait of Hormuz would open up “immediately.” He said not only the U.S. and Iran are on board with this deal, but so are several other Middle Eastern countries.
It seems like today Trump had a lot more answers about this alleged deal than at any other time he’s claimed a deal is near in the past. But I know what you’re thinking: Yeah right. He’s said this before and it’s never happened.
Well, he was asked about that too.
The only issue with this very detailed arrangement President Trump seems very confident in is that state-run media in Iran says Iran has not approved any text for an initial memorandum of understanding with the United States.
Now, it’s possible there could be a memorandum of understanding floating around, but not all governing factions in Iran have signed off yet. But that’s exactly what’s been happening every other time we’ve been through this.
There’s also a couple of interesting timing issues I want to call your attention to with this particular deal Trump is touting today.
If you remember yesterday, Trump had authorized a second day of U.S. military strikes on Iran. He was talking tough in the Oval Office, saying that Iran was “tapping” the United States along and if Iran didn’t sign the deal, they would pay the price, which signaled perhaps an escalation of the war.
Well, that, along with the really bad inflation numbers I reported in this video yesterday, tanked the stock market. It ended the day down nearly 1,000 points.
Then this morning, Trump posted this: The United States will be hitting Iran very hard tonight, which would have been the third straight night of strikes. And then he said the U.S. would be taking Kharg Island and other oil infrastructure.
That was at 5:22 a.m. Eastern this morning.
And then almost exactly five hours later, Trump called off tonight’s strikes and announced this new deal. And he pointed out an interesting number when he talked about the deal in the Oval Office.
I guess we’ll have to see this weekend if this time is different and a deal with Iran actually happens.
