President Trump just decided all on his own that he’s going to extend the ceasefire with Iran…indefinitely. But that’s very different than what he said just last week.
I guess Trump has a different view today because he just posted this to his social media page saying that the Pakistani mediators asked him to extend the ceasefire because Iran’s leadership is so fractured that they can’t come up with a unified proposal. Trump says the US blockade is going to remain in effect until the Iranians can get their proposal submitted.
But wait a minute I thought the deal was basically already done.
And it didn’t stop there. Trump was pretty specific about what Iran had agreed to.
He posted on Friday that Iran had agreed to never close the Strait of Hormuz again. Clearly that’s not accurate – it was never reopened. And he said that Iran would give the US what Trump calls the “nuclear dust.” There’s no such thing as nuclear dust – Trump made that up. What he’s talking about is the enriched uranium that Iran absolutely still has. But Iran was like – no. We never agreed to that. In fact the speaker of Iran’s parliament posted to his telegram account right after Trump made this claim saying Iran’s enriched uranium is not going to be transferred anywhere under any circumstances. Just as Iran’s soil is sacred, so is enriched uranium.
So now let’s go back to Trump extending the ceasefire on his own. To understand this we need to look at the timing and what we know and what we don’t know. We know the two-week ceasefire was supposed to end either today or tomorrow…depending on who you ask. Regardless, the Trump administration announced there would be negotiations with Iran in Pakistan to figure out if a deal could be reached to extend the ceasefire, find a path to peace or go back to war. First – that meeting was scheduled for last weekend, Iran said they were not going to attend. Then we heard the meeting got bumped to Monday – Iran said they were not going to attend. On Monday Trump said Vice President JD Vance who is leading the US delegation in this negotiations – was “wheels down” in Pakistan for the meeting. Then we saw Vance walking into the White House. Then we heard the meeting got moved to today – but we know the vice president never left Washington DC. And then this afternoon, Trump posted that he was extending the ceasefire – indefinitely until Iran provided their unified proposal. We also know that Iran does not like the u-s military blockade. In fact we know they’re pissed about it and they won’t negotiate with the United States unless that blockade is lifted. But trump won’t lift the blockade until the Strait of Hormuz is reopened. Which Iran won’t budge on – because they know it’s a leverage point not only against the United States but also the entire world.
So what we don’t know is — if Iran is going to agree to this ceasefire extension. The same speaker of the parliament posted yesterday saying “we do not accept negotiations under shadow of threats and in the past two weeks we have prepared to reveal new cards on the battle field.” Whether that’s true or not – I don’t know. Iran is known for bluster. But real the question is — is Iran ready to show those cards on the battlefield right now and tell Trump to take his ceasefire and shove it? Or are they going to take advantage of this indefinite ceasefire Trump just gave them and wait it out…while also keeping the Strait of Hormuz closed? It doesn’t appear that Iran is on any timeline – but we know the trump administration is – they really want this deal. The president wants to get out of this war. And Iran knows that.
