President Trump has signed the executive order for TikTok but it’s not a 90 day extension.
The executive order first of all does not make the tiktok ban go away. As I reported Trump does not have the power to do that under the law.
The order Trump signed tonight just directs the attorney general not to take any action on behalf of the government to enforce the protecting Americans from foreign adversary controlled applications act for 75 days from today. The order says doing that will permit the trump administration to figure out what he wants to do with TikTok.
This order say the attorney general cannot enforce the penalties on tiktok and it cannot enforce the penalties on any other American company for distributing, maintaining or updating tiktok. And once the 75 days are over, the department of justice cannot go back retroactively and enforce the penalties.
Trump’s order says the ban coinciding with him taking office interferes with his ability to assess the national security and foreign policy implications and interferes with his ability to make a deal so tiktok can remain operational in the United States. A deal – as I reported in this video could include the u-s government taking a 50% negotiating fee?
You heard Trump giving himself a lot of wiggle room on this one. Depends on the deal. Maybe I’ll make a deal. I don’t know. These are not words that big tech companies want to hear. But the fact is – this is part of Trump’s negotiating style. He does this with lots of things. And this is how trump answered the question – do you think tiktok and its CEO will go for that deal?
