President Trump’s name is still on the Kennedy Center, which means the Trump administration has officially blown past the judge’s midnight deadline to take those letters down.
A few minutes ago, the Trump administration filed this motion in court acknowledging to the judge that they missed his deadline and respectfully are asking him for a 12-hour extension to remove Trump’s name. They claim work crews were not able to take Trump’s name down because of thunderstorms in the Washington, D.C., area.
Now, I’ve literally been watching this all day, and while it’s true there were thunderstorms and the crew did have to stop working and go inside, it’s also true that they’ve been standing around doing nothing for hours.
The DOJ says they fully intend to comply with the judge’s order and expect they will be able to take Trump’s name down in the early hours of the morning on June 13 and are officially asking the judge to push the deadline to noon on Saturday.
The plaintiffs in this case say they take no position on a 12-hour extension but are absolutely opposed to delaying the removal of Trump’s name any further than that, saying, “Defendants had two weeks to comply with the order and only need an extension because of their inexcusable delay. Plaintiff also has concerns that this fits a pattern of non-compliance.”
We’ll see what the judge says. But for now, the work crews are out at the Kennedy Center, the scaffolding is up, but Trump’s name is still not gone.
