Senate Democrats are sharply criticizing someone other than former President Donald Trump for the riot at the US Capitol on January 6th.
The Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs committee just issued a scathing report about the failures of the FBI and Homeland Security.
The 105-page report titled “Planned in Plain Sight” expands on what we already knew and gives some new examples – of warnings, information and red flags that were missed in the weeks leading up to the violence that disrupted the congressional certification of the 2020 election.
The report also found multiple federal agencies failed to effectively coordinate in the lead-up to January 6th. The report basically says the Department of Defense, the Department of Justice and the FBI were replicating the Spiderman meme. Pointing the finger at each other with no one taking responsibility for being the lead agency.
The report says – the problem with the intelligence agencies wasn’t that they didn’t collect the intelligence indicating the potential of violence was coming – the problem was the FBI and Homeland Security – failed to fully and accurately assess the severity of those threats and failed to formally disseminate the threat to law enforcement partners with the proper level of urgency and alarm.
So what are they going to do about it? The Senate committee says the FBI and Homeland Security need to take a long, hard look at themselves and figure out a way to improve the process for assessing and sharing intelligence and improve their inter-agency coordination for future events. The senate committee also says congress needs to reassert its authority in legitimate oversight of the executive branch after roadblocks were thrown up, preventing them from getting access to the information they needed about January 6th from both the Trump and Biden administrations
