NO! There is no new federal monthly child tax credit in July. Debunking the misinformation

June 19, 2024

So many people have asked me about this post – or heard people saying there’s a new monthly child tax credit program starting in July.

This is bullshit. It’s clickbait. It’s not true. The federal government is not sending out $300 or $250 monthly child tax credits to anyone. Not in July – and certainly not as long this current group of lawmakers occupies congress.

Of course, the standard federal child tax credit that is deducted from your tax bill at tax time every year is still available as it has been for more than 20 years but that monthly payment for having a child no older than 16 like we saw during the pandemic expired a long time ago. Since then — democrats have introduced pieces of legislation to bring the monthly program back in some form but republicans have pushed back saying no. It’s not good policy.

Earlier this year – the House did pass an updated form of the child tax credit but even that did *not* include the monthly payments. And that legislation has been stalled in the senate since February. It’s not going anywhere. Now – it’s possible your state may be offering some form of child tax credit above and beyond the federal one so you can definitely look into that.

So where is this nonsense coming from? Who knows. You’d have to ask the people who post this kind of nonsense. But it appears like they’re recycling old information from the 2021 pandemic era monthly program and just changing the dates.

Look – as we get closer and closer to the election you’re going to keep coming across lies like this. But you don’t have to fall for it. Make sure you’re checking the sources. And this is an easy one to debunk. Don’t you think if the government was going to reintroduce such a massive program that would impact millions and millions of parents there would be something about it on the IRS’s website? Or the White House website? A quick check of both of those websites would show you there’s nothing. Plus, you know me…if this program was coming back you know I’d be talking about it a lot.
