President Trump likes to have his face on things. That’s no an opinion. This is the brand new immigrant visa – called the Trump gold card. This is the new pass for the US national parks. And back in October the US treasurer floated this as the official commemorative one dollar coin the US Mint was going to produce to celebrate America’s 250th birthday. Yes the heads side was going to be President Trump’s profile, and the tails side would be an image of Trump with his fist in the air with the words fight, fight, fight across the top…again as a symbol of the 250th birthday of the United States. Well – there was obviously some pushback to these images so – the US Mint revised the proposal. Do you want to see what they came up with and just recently released instead?
Here you go. Trump’s face still made the cut. The US Mint says the 250th anniversary 1 dollar commemorative coin — should have one of these three options for the heads side. All of them have Trump’s face or profile. And on the tails side… that fight, fight, fight image has been replaced – and they haven’t quite settled on a design — there are a bunch of other options with images of the u-s flag and a bald eagle. I want to be very clear here –I am not making this up — these images are on the US Mint’s website. But hang on – there’s more.
And before I tell you about the other new coins that were just announced last night – you need to understand why this is all happening. Back in 2020 congress passed a law called –the circulating collectible coin redesign act of 2020. In that law – it says in honor of the 250th anniversary of the United States, the treasury department will issue – up to five newly designed coins. The law says one of designs on the quarter must be “emblematic of a woman’s or women’s contribution to the birth of the nation or declaration of independence or any other monumental moments in American history.” In addition to that, the law said treasury may mint coins honoring native Americans and honoring innovation and innovators for just one year beginning on January 1 2026. And here’s the piece of the law that it appears the trump administration is using to justify this trump commemorative 1-dollar coin. The law says the Treasury may also mint a “one dollar coin with designs emblematic of the us semi quincentennial.” By law, presidents typically cannot appear on coins until two years after their death, but clearly the trump administration believes that phrase –designs that are “emblematic of the US semiquincentennial” is a loophole. By proposing these designs the US Mint is saying these images of Trump are emblematic of America’s 250th birthday. Now –this Trump coin still hasn’t officially been approved. But unless lawmakers step in and block this – it looks like it very well could happen.
But that’s not the only coin that’ll be minted to celebrate America’s 250th. As I said — the law calls for up to five new quarters to be minted along with that commemorative one dollar coin. And – heres’ the thing. Before Trump took office – for years — themes for those coins were debated and designed. They finally landed on the themes — the Declaration of Independence, the US constitution, the end of slavery – or abolition, the women’s right to vote – suffrage and civil rights. In October of 2024 we got some proposals of what those coins would look like.
The declaration of independence proposed quarter looked like this. It featured what was described at the time as personifying liberty.
The US constitution proposed quarter looked like this. At the time they described it as honoring the checks and balances of the three branches of our government.
The proposed abolition quarter looked like this. That is abolitionist Fredrick Douglass on the heads side and it was described as encapsulating the paradox of America during slavery when our nation was also proclaiming the ideals of liberty, equality and justice for all.
The proposed suffrage coin looked like this. It was described at the time as depicting a u-s suffragist as an “everywoman” to honor the single largest extension of voting rights.
And finally the civil rights coin looked like this. It featured then 6-year old Ruby Bridges who made history as the first black student to enter an all-white school in New Orleans.
But late last night – without any warning – the US Mint threw out all of those designs. And released five new quarter designs to celebrate the 250th birthday of America.
The proposed declaration of independence quarter – now looks like this. It now features Thomas Jefferson on the heads side.
The US constitution quarter looks like this with James Madison on the heads side.
And there is no longer a quarter for abolition, suffrage or civil rights. Instead
There is just a Gettysburg quarter that features Abraham Lincoln.
There is revolutionary war quarter that features George Washington.
And remember how the law says there must be a coin to celebrate the contributions of women to this country?
Well – the US Mint released the mayflower compact quarter which depicts a male pilgrim, with his arm around what appears to be his wife. I guess that’s it for a woman’s contribution to this country. Because that’s the only woman that appears on any of these new coins.
According to the u-s mint these semiquincentennial coins will start circulating in 2026.
