The iconic Kennedy Center in Washington DC…the place that has been a living memorial to President John F Kennedy after his assassination – will be renamed to the Trump-Kennedy Center.
That’s according to this post from the White House press secretary. She says the “highly respected board of the Kennedy center… have just voted unanimously to rename the Kennedy Center to the Trump-Kennedy center, because of the unbelievable work president trump has done over the last year in saving the building.”
So who is on this board? Well – President Trump fired the entire board of trustees at the Kennedy Center back in February and appointed his own people. As of today – President Donald J Trump is the board chairman. And the rest of the board consists of Susie Wiles – Trump’s chief of staff, Dan Scavino, Trump’s deputy chief of staff, Allison Lutnick, the wife of Trump’s commerce secretary Howard Lutnick, second lady Usha Vance and a bunch of other allies and mega donors to Trump’s campaign. Lee Greenwood – who of course sings “God Bless the USA” the song President Trump always uses at all his rallies is also on this board.
So the question is – does the Kennedy Center board have the power to do this. Well – of course they can vote to rename the Kennedy Center whatever they want. The board of trustees are usually in charge of guiding the artistic mission of the facility. Like – which productions will play at the theater, and what colors are used. But the Kennedy Center is a government building. It was established through a law passed by congress. So it’s very likely that the name of the building can’t actually *officially* be chanced without going through the standard government process which would probably include a comment period and most likely a new law passed by congress. Now that doesn’t mean that the trump administration won’t try to change the name without congressional approval. But either way – this announcement is going to bring lots of lawsuits.
