A Florida federal judge just appointed a special master to go through the documents seized by the FBI from Mar-a-Lago in August…and in the process the judge resoundingly denied the government’s motion.
The special master will be federal district court Judge Raymond Dearie from the Eastern District of New York. He also served on the FISA court for years, so yes he has the security clearances to look at all the documents. I posted a video all about him earlier this week. The judge’s ruling today says Judge Dearie should be able to look through everything taken from Mar-a-Lago – including those highly sensitive and top secret classified documents — which the government argued should not be part of the special master’s scope.
The last part of judge cannon’s ruling, she rejected the Justice Department’s request to resume its criminal investigation into why those classified documents were at Mar-a-Lago while the special master does his work. The government argued it cannot separate the criminal investigation from the national intelligence review into the potential damage of having those documents in a place where they shouldn’t have been.
Judge Cannon gave the special master until November 30th to finish his review. The Department of Justice can still appeal.
