That’s when special counsel Jack Smith wants to begin the trial of former President Donald Trump in that alleged election interference case.
The special counsel just filed this 8-page document with the Washington DC federal court and said that “trial date represents an appropriately speedy trial in the public interest and in the interest of justice, while affording the defendant time to prepare his defense and raise pre-trial legal issues with the court.
The filing also points out that having a “speedy trial” isn’t just the right of the defendant, according to the special counsel the sixth amendment’s speedy trial clause and the speedy trial act, which talk about the right to a timely trial is “vested” in the public not just the defendant.
The special counsel also says his office is prepared to “exceed” its discovery obligations and provide “substantial assistance” to help Trump’s team review of all the evidence in this case. This comes after Trump’s legal team said they want this trial delayed for years because they need time to review all this stuff.
The former president’s team will also submit their ideas for when they want to see a trial start. And tomorrow both sides will be in Judge Chutkan’s court to talk about when Trump’s trial will begin. In the end, it’ll be up to the judge.
