A historic bill was signed into law today. Thousands of people gathered at the White House to celebrate.
It was a party real party with performances by Sam Smith and Cyndi Lauper. Flanked by House and Senate leadership and Democrats and Republicans, President Biden signed the Respect for Marriage Act into law this afternoon.
This law federally protects gay marriage rights across the country and requires both federal and state governments to recognize gay marriage as long as the licenses were legally obtained. This bill does not force states to perform gay marriages if it’s contrary to the state’s law. It also does not require religious organizations or businesses to service gay marriages if it is against their religion.
