UPDATE — The President signed this bill a few hours after I posted this video. NO government shutdown tomorrow.
The Senate & House just passed a continuing resolution to avoid a government shutdown – at least temporarily — through December 3rd with both Democrats and Republicans voting yes.
That’s one crisis averted.
This continuing resolution keeps spending levels the same, keeps money flowing to victims of the recent natural disasters — like Hurricane Ida — and allocates money to relocate our Afghan allies here to the us.
This bill will now go over to the White House for the President’s signature. And he’s expected to sign it.
When that happens – one crisis will be averted – at least until December third…then we’ll have this fight all over again.
But the other crisis is real and still looming. I’m talking about the possibility of the u-s defaulting on its debt. The Treasury Secretary says that’ll happen on or about October 18th. At this point — there’s no resolution.
PLUS
There will be no vote on the bipartisan $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill in the House tonight. The House Speaker had promised moderate Democrats that today would be the day the bill would go to the floor.
But House progressives said without an assurance that the companion $3.5 trillion “human infrastructure” bill would also be passed, they would vote NO on the bipartisan plan.
Instead of putting a vote to the floor that she knew she would lose, the House Speaker put out a statement late Thursday night saying the negotiations continue and the vote would be pulled for the evening.
After the Speaker’s decision, the White House thanked progressive and moderate Democrats for all their hard work in these negotiations and the President is confident both pieces of legislation will ultimately pass.
