Remember that baby formula shortage crisis over the summer?
Well, a new report investigating the FDA over its response found yep. It was a mess. The report actually said it was a perfect storm of “systemic vulnerabilities” that led to the crisis. The report also found that “if the FDA is expected to do more, it needs more.”
The new report goes all the way back to the original problem that shut down the u-s’s largest baby formula manufacturer, Abbott Nutrition earlier this year.
Based on dozens of interviews with employees, the 10-page assessment highlights major areas where improvement is needed. The report round the FDA needs to step up with more modern technology…it needs more staff, training, and equipment…it needs updated emergency response systems that can handle more than one incident at a time –and the FDA needs to get a better understanding of the infant formula industry.
The baby formula shortage still isn’t over. It’s better than it was over the summer but certainly not back to normal. And the white house continues to import cleared baby formula from other countries through its Fly Formula program. The most recent flight was on September 2nd.
