President Trump’s tariff power — may be coming to an end…at least when it comes to one country. And that’s because a handful of House Republicans just crossed party lines and voted with Democrats. And trump…is pissed.
So here’s what’s happening – as you know – President Trump has been using tariffs to control his foreign policy. He puts the tariffs on when he’s mad at a country or when he wants to renegotiate trade policy then takes them off then jacks them up and then comes to some “deal” and the two sides settle. Well – the thing is – Trump’s been using a novel justification for doing all that stuff with tariffs. He declared a national security emergency over trade deficits and fentanyl and Trump has said that gives him this emergency power to just impose tariffs however he wants whenever he wants on whatever country he wants without the consent of Congress.
Well – for months Democrats and even some Republicans have been like – no – the constitution gives Congress the power of the purse which includes the power to tax – and tariffs are a tax. So they’ve bene trying to reign in Trump’s tariff power by canceling this emergency that trump has declared. And today – at least when it comes to Canada – it just worked.
The House just voted to end the national emergency trump has declared to justify his huge tariffs on our largest trading partner – Canada. This bill passed because of six Republicans who joined almost every single Democrat.
The final vote was 219 to 211.
One Democrat joined the Republicans to vote no.
And the six Republicans who voted with all the Democrats to end this emergency against Canada included Representatives Bacon of Nebraska, Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania, Hurd of Colorado, Kiley of California, Massie of Kentucky and Newhouse of Washington.
Now – this bill goes to the Senate – where it could also pass. Because senators have already passed similar bills that would reign in Trump’s tariff power. Now even if this bill does pass in the Senate – President Trump is absolutely going to veto it. So it probably won’t become law – but it is a major rebuke of his tariff policy and Trump is not having it. He threatened Republicans in this social media post today where he said “any republican in the house or senate that votes against tariffs will seriously suffer the consequences come election time and that includes primaries. He ended by saying…”no republican should be responsible for destroying this privilege.”
Well – even if this bill does not become a law – the supreme court may step in and destroy what trump calls a “privilege” when they release their ruling on the tariff case any day now.
See how your lawmaker voted here.
