How Do You Get A Refund If The Airline Cancels Your Flight? | Lisa Remillard

How do you get a refund if the airline cancels your flight?

December 29, 2022

How do you get your money back if Southwest has canceled your flight and what about reimbursements for all the unexpected expenses you incurred like hotels, rental cars, food?

Well, by federal law, if any airline cancels your flight – for any reason – including weather they must give you a prompt refund.

Southwest says if your flight was canceled between December 24 through January 2 there is an easy form on their website to fill out, you just need your confirmation number and your first and last name. You will get your refund – not a credit – a refund to your original form of payment.

But the real question is – what about all the unexpected costs you had as a result of their cancelation? Well, you need to keep *all* your receipts. Southwest says they will honor “reasonable requests for reimbursement for meals, hotel and alternate transportation” if you email them through their website.

And remember, if they hassle you about it, you can appeal directly to the Department of Transportation. I have personal experience with dot – they get stuff done.
