What’s the average life expectancy in the United States? Do men or women live longer?

November 30, 2023

How long are you going to live?

Well – isn’t that a loaded question.

Now – no one can tell you the actual answer – but today — the CDC released a report that can at least give you the average life expectancy in the United States. On average – for men and women — the CDC says life expectancy in 2022 increased to 77.5 years. That’s a full year increase in life expectancy from 2021 – mostly because there were fewer Covid deaths in 2022 which skewed the numbers in 2021.

for 2021 – the CDC said average life expectancy cratered to 76.4 years which was the lowest figure since 1996.

But the 77.5 life expectancy in 2022 is still much less than 2019 when the US life expectancy was 78.8 years.

This CDC report crunches all of the numbers based on the provisional death count provided by the National Vital Statistics system. Those numbers are categorized obviously, by age but also by gender and by nationality. The report out the life expectancy of men and women specifically and what is causing their lives to come to an end. Before I explain all that, if you want to read this report and see all the data – I will email this out to you tonight in my news girl news roundup email so make sure you sign yourself up.

Ok – what’s cutting American lives short? Take a look at this chart — according to the numbers in the report which reflect the average for men and women, an increase in the number of deadly flu and pneumonia contributed to the life expectancy numbers. But there were also increased cases of perinatal conditions which are conditions that pop up round the time of birth or death. Then there were increases in kidney disease, nutritional deficiencies, congenital malformations – then there is a large increase in residual which is a catch all for everything else including drugs. Now – on the flip side – offsetting these increases is the significant decrease in covid deaths in 2022 by more than 84%.

And if you want to win an argument in your household about who will live longer – the answer – clearly – according to this report is women.

According to the report – in 2022 men who live in the United States on average are expected to live 74.8 years and women – on average are expected to live 80.2 years.

The new CDC report, which is considered “provisional” in advance of a final report due in December.
