For about 15 minutes tonight, in a primetime address President Biden laid out all the reasons from his perspective – why walking away from Israel and Ukraine now would cost Americans much more…later.
The President outlined what he says are Russian president Vladimir Putin’s plans if he’s successful in Ukraine. Biden says that includes invading Poland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania – which as I’ve reported before are all NATO allies. And if Putin makes good on his word, and goes in to any of those places – the president says American troops would be obligated go to war. And when it comes to Israel – Biden says abandoning them now would only embolden the terrorist organization Hamas and its known backer Iran. A combo he says would like to unleash more aggression in the middle east.
So tomorrow the President says he’s going to send over another supplemental aid package to Congress to help fund the military efforts in both Ukraine and Israel. He did not outline an exact dollar amount but he said it would be an “unprecedented” amount. He says it’s money well spent to keep American lives safe.
I’ve actually reported this before, but you have to understand, when we’re talking about military aid specifically…it’s not like the United States shows up in Ukraine and Israel and unloads a brinks truck filled with cash. Those weapons are shipped to Ukraine and Israel from our stockpiles, and then the money allocated by congress is used to replenish those stockpiles with American made weapons. As for the humanitarian aid – it’s the same. That money is given to established organizations like the United Nations humanitarian aid service and other organizations who specialize in providing the basics to people who are suffering in war zones. As I told you earlier today the dollar amount that is allocated will – in the end – be up to the United States Congress. It’s their decision. They’re the ones who are going to have to pass the legislation through both the house and the senate.
But the president says time is of the essence
The president also spent time talking about the need for the Israelis and the Palestinians to find a way to peace in a two-state solution and he again encouraged the Israeli government to learn from the mistakes of America and not be driven by their rage that they feel after the massacre of their people on October 7th
