Starting next year…when you pick up a one or a five or any bill, you’ll see – for the very first time – the names of two women.
The signatures of both Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and US Treasurer Lynn Malerba will now be printed on either side of our paper currency. Yellen is the first woman to serve as Treasury Secretary and Malerba is the first woman to be the Treasurer and head of the US Mint. She is also the first Native American to serve in that role.
For more than a century the signatures of both the Treasurer and Treasury Secretary have appeared on legal tender. But it has taken a while to get this done. While Yellen has been in her post since January 2021, Malerba was just sworn in in September.
The new currency will enter circulation next year.
