Quick Midterm election PSA before the votes are counted

November 5, 2022

With all the rhetoric out there around the Midterm Election I felt like it was important to remind everyone that generally, elections are fair, and extremely secure. Of course there are always issues that creep up but generally, those issues NEVER impact the outcome of an election.

We have arrived at a place in our country where casting doubt on election results before the outcomes are announced is becoming more and more commonplace. This is dangerous.

The time to fight about HOW to conduct elections is in the years prior to elections. There are lots of remedies allowed through our laws and our Constitution and lots of opportunities at the local level for YOU, the voter to get involved. If you don’t like the way your local or state elected officials are doing things it’s on YOU to change it.

But what’s not right is casting doubt on an election UNLESS you win. What are we? In kindergarten again? Let me take that back, even kindergarteners know sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. Just because you lose doesn’t mean the other team cheated. It usually just means you lost. The same goes for elections.

Of course there are also LEGAL ways to challenge election results. Those are completely valid and appropriate. But what’s NOT appropriate is continuing to cast doubt after a court has ruled. Once the court rules, it’s over. And as I said in the video, that’s when you lose gracefully, organize, find a better candidate and try again next time. That’s a WINNING mentality and honestly, how our Democracy works.

Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
