It appears that President Trump just took an offramp when it comes to Greenland. He is clearly trying to de-escalate…
A short time ago Trump posted this to his social media page. Saying – “based upon a very productive meeting that I have had with the secretary general of NATO, Mark Rutte, we have formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland and, in fact, the entire arctic region. This solution, if consummated, will be a great one for the United States of America, and all NATO nations. Based upon this understanding, I will not be imposing the tariffs that were scheduled to go into effect on February 1st. Additional discussions are being held concerning the golden dome as it pertains to Greenland. Further information will be made available as discussions progress.”
Ok – very important here – if you watched my video earlier today – you heard directly from president trump about Greenland. His tone this morning was *very* different than the tone in this post. This morning Trump chastised NATO he said they and Denmark were ungrateful and that NATO should get out of the way and should just hand ownership of Greenland over to the United States. Trump said the United States must “own” it…not lease it. Over the weekend trump even threatened to impose tariffs on those who opposed him. But in this post about this new “framework” trump says *nothing* about the United States “owning” Greenland. He only said this deal would be “great” for the United States of America if it happens…he later said the deal would last infinitely. It’s also important to know this framework was determined between Trump and NATO’s secretary general. Mark Rutte is not in charge of Denmark or Greenland. Of course he is the current head of the NATO alliance and a very important person – he’s not in charge of Greenland or Denmark. And it’s unclear what the Danes and Greenlanders think about this framework – or if they were even consulted. It’s also important to know that trump admitted in this post that he is backing down from his tariff threat.
So why? Why all of a sudden this turn around? Well – the facts are this. Greenland and Denmark clearly said – no to Trump owning Greenland. NATO clearly said – no. Europe said no. They all were at the very same conference in Davos just yesterday talking about how Trump’s behavior is reshaping the world order and because of that they need to start thinking about finding other strategic partners outside of the United States. Today – the EU parlement blocked finalization of a trade deal with the United States over this Greenland issue. And closer to home – yesterday – the US stock market nosedived which Trump specifically mentioned in his speech.
Very importantly here – no one knows what the details of this framework. But from what we know based on trump’s post – the reality is — all of the same things the US is getting out of it — could have been accomplished without all the threats and the bluster and the turmoil. That’s because the United States signed a treaty with Denmark in 1951 that gives the United States all of the things Trump is talking about in the post –and the access they want to Greenland for military purposes.
