What’s up with Iran saying they’re at war with the United States? I’m sure you’ve been hearing a lot about that recently. But I wanted to share with you what President Trump said today about Iran and the reported build up of its missile and nuclear capabilities.
So let me just back up for a second so you fully understand what Trump is talking about. You probably remember back in June when President Trump ordered those B2 bombers into Iran to strike its nuclear facilities. Remember he said the B2’s “obliterated” their nuclear capabilities? Well – that’s true the sites themselves were obliterated, but whether Iran’s entire nuclear capabilities were wiped out in those strikes is unclear. Iran actually has multiple nuclear sites not just the ones that were hit and intelligence agencies in the United States and even in Israel have speculated that it’s definitely possible that Iran moved some or all of those nuclear assets into other facilities before the B2s even showed up. It’s also true that during that time Israel and Iran were involved in the so-called 12-day war with each other. The bad blood between those countries goes back decades. This animosity isn’t new. And then of course for years prior to that the United States along with our European allies have put all kinds of sanctions on Iran because of its nuclear program. Those sanctions have stifled Iran’s economy and oil industry.
Obviously – Iran does not like any of that. Iran’s leaders believe its nuclear program is essential to its survival and see any country that tries to hinder their ability to make nuclear weapons as a threat to their existence. So now – there is new reporting saying that Iran is trying to build up its missile capabilities and its nuclear capabilities. And then over the weekend, Iran’s president said during an interview that he believes his country is engaged in a “full scale war” with not just the United States but also Israel and Europe. He said those countries do not want Iran to be a stable nation.
Now – here’s what you need to understand about those statements. Iranian leaders often talk tough especially when it comes to the United States. It’s not uncommon especially when the intended audience of that tough talk is the Iranian people. Also – it’s not a coincidence that this interview with the Iranian president was released over the weekend. It was likely done – because everyone knew that President Trump was going to be meeting today with Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu at Mar-a-Lago. And everyone knew the two of them were going to talk about lots of issues including Iran.
Now – to be very clear – president trump did not say the United States was at war with Iran. He didn’t say anything close to that. He didn’t even address the Iranian president’s comments. But what he did say is that the United States will continue to support Israel and at the same time you have to understand that President Trump has been very clear since he came back into office that Iran can not have a nuclear weapon. He says he’s willing to negotiate with Iran to bring an end to the nuclear program but a deal has not materialized yet. So now that you have that back story I want you to listen again to what president trump said later in the day today about Iran and how the United States would respond to the their build up of weapons.
