So – the East Wing of the White House is being demolished after all…not just the façade…and it’s probably going to all be gone by this weekend. Even though that’s not what the president said originally.
Well – in less than three months – the story has changed. Here’s President Trump talking about it in the oval office today.
So what exactly is coming down? Well – it’s hard to tell exactly because there are no official plans released – but based on what we’re seeing and what the president is saying today – we know earlier this week the façade of the east wing has come down but now we’re seeing that this whole section of the east wing is also going to come down.
Trump also confirmed today that the $200 million price tag has ballooned to now $300 million. He continually says that this project is being privately funded – but the fact is – the White House has not released a list of who those donors actually are and there are a lot of questions about what they are going to get out of the deal.
It’s also worth noting that today the president also said something about the military getting involved in this ballroom project– perhaps he means the army corps of engineers getting involved to make sure everything is structurally sound? It’s very unclear – because he was unclear about it. It was just a passing comment. But what he has been consistent about is the need for this ballroom. He has said that presidents for more than 100 years have wanted one to hold grand official events. So he’s delivering with this 90,000 square foot massive building.
You might be interested to know then entire main section of the White House itself is about 55,000 square feet so the White House itself is going to be dwarfed by Trump’s new ballroom.
