9. 13. And 30.
Let’s start with 9. Today is day 9 of this government shutdown and we are nowhere near the end. Of course all federal employees are *really* dealing with the consequences because they’re either furloughed or having to show up to work with no pay. But by next week – average Americans are really going to start to feel this shutdown. Remember I reported that the longer the shutdown lasts the more average Americans are impacted? Well – we’re already starting to see the beginning stages at airports across the country with air traffic controllers calling out sick – which I warned was going to happen in these videos. Because those controllers are not there – this week we’ve seen multiple airport being forced to close for several hours a day. That then forces flights to be diverted to other airports which then causes delays, cancellations and an overall nightmare for travelers. That’s going to continue to get worse as this goes on. We’ll likely start to see more airport closures for longer. Or we’ll start to see TSA lines get longer and longer because there will be fewer and fewer agents at security checkpoints. Oh – and on a completely separate note – if you filed for a tax extension your taxes are due on October 15th – but the IRS is furloughing a ton of its workforce because of the shutdown so that will impact your refund and processing. That’s just the tip of the iceberg.
Now – let’s talk about 13. October 13 – which is Monday — is the day that military paychecks start to be processed so our more than 1 million service members can be paid on the 15th. If the government isn’t open by Monday, then those paychecks will either be reduced or non-existent. Politically speaking– not paying our active duty military members while they’re actually deployed – is a bad look. But again – that political pitfall doesn’t seem to be moving lawmakers into action either.
And the last one 30. If House Speaker Mike Johnson follows through on his plan – the United States House of Representatives will be on recess for 30 days. Yes – you heard that correctly – as our government is shutdown – today — Speaker Mike Johnson says he sees no reason to bring the House back into session – next week either. The House has been on recess since September 19th. And if Johnson keeps the house out of session next week too they will not be back in Washington DC- until October 20th. That means no votes. No negotiations. No swearing ins. Nothing.
Here’s the thing – neither the Democrats or the Republicans seem to be shifting their positions. But if the situation at airports goes from sporadic closures at only a few airports to widespread at lots of airports and goes from airports closed a few hours a day to closed all day putting tons of pressure on travelers and air safety or if military members and military families really start to put pressure on lawmakers – we’re going to be stuck right where we are.
