The Treasury Departments just released these. “first drafts” of the commemorative one-dollar coin that they say may be minted for the 250th anniversary of the signing of the declaration of independence which is next year.
Notice something? Both the heads side and the tails side of this 250th commemorative coin feature very large images of President Trump. The tails side – even says “fight, fight fight” at the top with Trump holding his fist in the air.
These images come directly from the treasurer of the United States Brandon Beach and the treasury secretary Scott Bessent. In fact, the treasurer says no fake news here these are the actual first drafts.
Now I want to be clear on a few things. Most importantly – by federal law dating back to 1866 – only deceased individuals can appear on any minted coins by the United States government that are used as currency. In fact a law clarifying that in 2005 said to be featured on a presidential dollar coin, a president must have been deceased for a minimum of two years before their coin can be eligible to be minted. And in case that isn’t enough – the founding fathers of the United States considered it unpatriotic to put the likeness of any living person on any united states currency.
But here’s the thing – in 2020 – congress passed a law called the circulating collectible coin redesign act of 2020. In that law – it says in honor of the 250th anniversary, the Treasury Department will issue – up to five newly designed coins. One of designs on the quarter will must be “emblematic of a woman’s or women’s contribution to the birth of the nation or declaration of independence or any other monumental moments in American history.” In addition to that, the treasury may mint coins honoring native Americans and honoring innovation and innovators for the one year period beginning on January 1 2026. And here’s the piece of the law that it appears the Trump administration is using to justify this Trump coin. The law says the treasury may also mint a “1 dollar coin with designs emblematic of the us semi quincentennial.” The treasury department is saying these images of trump are emblematic of America’s 250th birthday.
While its true the US treasurer is saying this coin draft image is not a joke and not “fake news” – it’s unclear how these coins can be legally be minted given the very clear language in federal law that forbids any image of any living president on any coin.
