I don’t normally cover international news. But French President Emmanuel Macron said something tonight in an address to his people that I think you need to hear too.
That last part jumped out at me. President Macron just said tonight that France and the European nations of the European Union need to further bolster their own military capabilities but they also must be prepared to fight Russia even if the United States is not by their side. Let that sink in for a moment.
In case you are not tuned in to geo politics – you need to understand the United States has been allies with France since 1778. For literally hundreds of years the US and France have fought on the same side against world enemies. Just last week president macron was in Washington bro-ing it up with President Trump in front of the cameras. And now we know behind closed doors he was also pleading with president trump to not abandon Ukraine in this fight against Russia. Tonight – Macron explained why.
You’re probably thinking why do we care if Putin threatens France or Europe. What does that have to do with America?
Well first, in case you didn’t know Vladimir Putin has said for years that what he really wants is to expand the borders of Russia and expand what he calls his “sphere of influence.” That means not only taking over Ukraine but also potentially taking over other neighboring countries. The problem with that is that Russia borders several NATO countries. And article five of NATO says an attack on one is an attack on all. So if Russia goes into any of those countries all these countries are required to respond. Including France and the United States. Which President Macron says they cannot happen.
Macron talked about the peace deal that was discussed over the weekend with all of the leaders in Europe and President Zelensky of Ukraine after that disastrous meeting in the oval office between President Trump and Zelensky. But Macron said tonight pressuring Zelensky to cave to Russian demands to achieve that peace is not the right way to go especially since Russia has consistently broken several peace deals in the past.
On top of the security threat from Russia – president macron also talked about the economic threat that Europe is now facing from President Trump. Something he said the French and the European Union will not take lying down.
